Delicious foods I thought I could never eat again with Celiac Disease- and where to find them gluten free in NYC

Giving up gluten was so hard - especially when trying to avoid all cross contamination. Goodbye buttery croissants, farewell fried vegetable dumplings, adios everything bagel with cream cheese. But also goodbye to “gluten-free” fries fryed in the same fryer as breaded chicken, and cheese cut on the same cutting board as bread, and nuts processed on the same equipment as wheat.

I have been on a mission for years to find the best gluten-free alternatives in my home, NYC. Here are some game-changers I love:

  • Bagels at Modern Bread and Bagel - my go to is a toasted everything bagel with chive cream cheese. It is the closest chew and taste to a NY gluten-bagel I have found yet!

  • Dim Sum at Buddha Bodai - In addition to many other gluten-free treats on their menu (like their vegan cumin chicken!), it has been near impossible to find celiac safe dim sum until Buddha Bodai!

  • Pizza at Keste - So, it isn’t too hard to find gluten-free pizza, BUT it is very hard to find GREAT celiac-safe pizza. Keste has incredible gluten-free crust made in a dedicated kitchen.

  • Samosas at Ahimsa Garden - Ahimsa makes gluten free samosas - fried in a seperate fryer! They are delicious and so satisfying.

  • Eggplant Parmesean at Bistango - It is common for eggplant to be breaded with wheat flour - even when its not made for eggplant parm. While some celiac-friendly restaurants offer chicken parmesean - eggplant parm can be hard to find. Bistango has a delicious, soft, melt-in-your-mouth gluten-free eggplant parm.
